3 Minute History Lessons: Explorers (Reading Passages and Questions)

One page (sometimes two pages) biographies about some of the most prominent explorers of the New World. Each reading passage is followed by between three and six multiple choice questions. There are six passages and one short answer question sheet that reviews the big ideas of the explorer passages. The explorers included are Leif Eriksson, Amerigo Vespucci, John Cabot, Ferdinand Magellan, Marco Polo, and Giovanni da Verrazzano. I did not include Christopher Columbus because students know a lot about him already. However, many of the connections between Columbus and the given explorers are discussed.

The reading passages in this pack are designed to take between three and five minutes to read and answer the cooresponding questions. The questions are designed to follow the pattern of many standardized test questions including questions about the main idea, making inferences, and giving examples.

The short answer sheet is designed to give students a chance to reflect on what they have learned about the explorers and synthesize all of the material to look for patterns in the material.
