Martin Luther King, Jr. Day: Differentiated Reading Passages and Worksheets

Are you looking for a resource to teach your students about Martin Luther King, Jr. while still developing their reading skills? These reading passages and worksheets are just what you need.

Martin Luther King, Jr. plays a vital role in American history and as a model for behavior today. Many schools (including my own) ask teachers to spend time on King during/before Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, but provide little or no materials for a meaningful class discussion or activity.

This reading passage is an introduction to the life and work of Dr. King. It is just over two pages long (size 14 font). It is written for students in 5th through 8th grade. I tried very hard to incorporate the history of the country into King's story where appropriate. He was born in the South right before the Depression, America's relationship to communism during the 60s, etc... to help give students context (and maybe inspire them to learn more about a topic). There are four differentiated versions of the reading passage to help you meet the needs of all of your students.

Also included are 10 deep thinking discussion/long answer questions about Dr. King's life based on the facts from the reading passage, two worksheets to help kids categorize the information they have learned, and a worksheet to help students brainstorm things they can do to serve their communities like Martin Luther King, Jr.

Answer keys are included.
